AC Repair in Chase, Kamloops and the Shuswap
AC repair in this part of the province is not a comfort call. Summers in the Thompson and Shuswap valleys sit in the mid to high thirties for stretches at a time, and Environment Canada issues a heat warning here when daytime highs are forecast at 35 degrees or more with overnight lows staying at or above 18 for two consecutive days. Overnight is the part that matters: when the house does not get a chance to dump its heat after dark, an air conditioner that is only just coping stops coping. We repair central systems, ductless mini-splits and heat pumps running in cooling mode, and the phone is answered around the clock.
Why It Always Fails on the Hottest Day
Because that is the day the system is asked for everything it has. A unit low on refrigerant, running on a weak capacitor, or pushing air through a coil that has not been cleaned in five years will hold up fine at 26 degrees and fall over at 38. The failure was there the whole time. The heat is what exposed it.
The practical consequence is that late June is a much better time to look at a system than late July, and it is worth saying out loud because everybody calls in the same week.
What We Find Most Often
A failed run capacitor. Cheap, common, and the classic symptom is an outdoor unit that hums but does not start, or a fan that will turn if you nudge it. This is one of the most frequent single-part repairs there is.
A pitted contactor. The relay that brings the outdoor unit on. It arcs every cycle for years and eventually welds or fails to close.
Low refrigerant. A sealed system does not consume refrigerant, so low charge means a leak. Simply topping it up without finding the leak means paying for the same repair again next summer and venting refrigerant in between. We find it first.
A frozen indoor coil. Counter-intuitive but common: the unit runs, ice forms on the coil, and airflow drops to nothing. The cause is almost always restricted airflow from a filter nobody has changed or a dirty coil, or a low charge. It needs to be thawed and the actual cause fixed, not just switched off and on.
A blocked outdoor condenser. Cottonwood, grass clippings, dust and dryer lint pack the fins until the unit cannot reject heat. It runs constantly, the pressures climb, and eventually it trips out on a high-pressure safety.
Drainage. Condensate lines block with algae, the pan overflows, and a safety switch shuts the system down. On a system in an attic or above finished space this is the failure that also causes water damage.

Repair or Replace
The honest thresholds. A unit under about ten years old with a capacitor, contactor or fan motor failure is worth repairing without much thought. A unit in the fifteen to twenty year range with a failed compressor or a refrigerant leak in the coil generally is not, because you are spending a large fraction of a new system on the weakest part of an old one.
The other consideration is refrigerant. Systems old enough to run on R-22 are no longer supported by new production of that refrigerant, and what remains is reclaimed and expensive. A major R-22 repair is usually money spent on a system with a fixed remaining life. If yours is one of those, we will say so rather than sell you a repair we do not believe in.
Where We Work
Chase
Chase sits in the valley bottom at the outlet of Little Shuswap Lake, and it gets the same summer heat as the rest of the Thompson corridor. Most of the older village housing was not built with cooling in mind, so a lot of what is here has been added later: window units, a mini-split retrofitted onto a wall, or a coil dropped into a furnace plenum that was never sized for it. That last one is worth knowing about, because a cooling coil adds static pressure to a duct system, and an older furnace blower can end up unable to move enough air across it. When a Chase system is not cooling well and nothing is broken, undersized airflow is the usual answer.
Kamloops
This is the hottest part of our service area by a clear margin. Kamloops has a semi-arid climate with more than two thousand hours of sunshine a year, daytime highs regularly between 35 and 40 through July and August, and records well above that. Air conditioning in Kamloops is not optional equipment, and systems here are worked harder than anywhere else we go. The failures reflect it: heat-stressed capacitors, compressors that have spent years running at high head pressure, and condensers choked with dust because the climate is dry and dusty. Undersizing shows up here faster than anywhere else, because a system with no margin has nothing left on a 38 degree afternoon.
Salmon Arm
Slightly moderated by the lake compared with Kamloops, but still firmly in heat warning territory most summers. There is more newer construction here with cooling designed in from the start, so a larger share of the calls are genuine component failures on properly sized systems rather than the capacity problems we see on retrofits.
The Shuswap
Sorrento, Blind Bay, Scotch Creek, Sicamous and the lake communities. Ductless mini-splits dominate out here, because a lot of these buildings are cabins and additions with no ductwork to put a central system into, and because a mini-split running in heat pump mode covers shoulder season heating in a building that would otherwise need something else. The seasonal pattern matters: a system that sat idle all winter and gets switched on for the first hot weekend is the single most common Shuswap call we take, and the fault is usually something that could have been found in a fifteen minute startup check in May.
What Moves the Price
The part, obviously. But also whether the fault is a component or a refrigerant leak, since leak detection and repair is a longer job than swapping a capacitor. Whether the system is central, ductless or a heat pump. Access to the outdoor unit and to the indoor coil. And whether we are repairing a system with a future or patching one that is at the end, which is a conversation we would rather have honestly and early.
Common Questions
Why is my AC running but not cooling?
The most common causes are low refrigerant from a leak, a frozen indoor coil caused by restricted airflow, a condenser blocked with dust or cottonwood so it cannot reject heat, or a failed capacitor leaving the compressor unable to start. Check the filter first, then call.
How much does AC repair cost?
It depends entirely on the fault. A capacitor or contactor is a small part and a short visit. A refrigerant leak means finding the leak, repairing it, evacuating and recharging, which is a considerably bigger job. We diagnose first and tell you what it is before doing the work.
Should I repair or replace my air conditioner?
Under about ten years old, repair almost always makes sense. Fifteen to twenty years old with a failed compressor or a leaking coil, replacement usually does. My heat pump is not cooling. Is that the same repair?
Largely, yes. A heat pump in cooling mode is an air conditioner, and the common failures are the same. The differences are the reversing valve and the defrost controls, which are extra components that can also fail.
