What the Symptoms Usually Mean

No heat at all. On a gas furnace, most often ignition: a dirty flame sensor, a failed igniter, or a safety that has locked the appliance out. A furnace that tries three times and stops has told you it is failing a check rather than that it is dead.

The furnace runs but the house is cold. Usually airflow rather than the burner. A blocked filter, a failed blower capacitor, or duct that has come apart in a crawlspace.

Short cycling. Starts, runs briefly, stops, repeats. Restricted airflow overheating the exchanger, an oversized unit, or a thermostat sited somewhere that does not represent the house.

Cold rooms at the end of the run. Almost always duct design or duct damage rather than the furnace, and replacing the furnace will not fix it.

Noise. A rumble on start-up, a squeal from the blower, or a bang when it fires are each different faults and each worth attending to rather than living with.

What We Repair

Gas and propane furnaces, boilers and hydronic systems, heat pumps in heating mode, and the controls and thermostats around them. Because Jeff holds a licensed B gas fitter ticket alongside the Red Seal in plumbing, the gas train, the venting and the combustion side are part of the same visit rather than a referral. If the repair turns into a replacement, we can carry it through on furnace installation without handing you to someone else.

No Heat in Winter Is a Plumbing Problem Too

This is the part people underestimate. A heating failure in January is uncomfortable for a few hours and expensive after about a day, because once the building temperature drops far enough the plumbing starts to freeze. Supply lines in exterior walls, in crawlspaces and in unheated additions go first, and a split pipe does not announce itself until it thaws.

That is the reason we answer the phone through the night rather than taking a message. If you are without heat and cannot get it back, shutting the water off at the main and opening the taps to drain the system is worth doing before the temperature in the building drops, and it is a great deal cheaper than the alternative.

Where We Work

Chase

Being in the village means we are minutes from most of it, which is the whole point on a no-heat call in February. The housing stock here is largely from the seventies and eighties, so a lot of what we are repairing is second-generation equipment on original ductwork, and the fault is frequently in the distribution rather than the appliance everybody is looking at.

Kamloops

Forty minutes west, and a genuinely two-season climate: cold enough winters to need real heating capacity, and summers regularly between 35 and 40. That means a lot of Kamloops systems are shared furnace and cooling installations, so a heating fault can turn out to be a component the two sides have in common, most often the blower or the control board. We check the whole system rather than only the half that is complaining.

Salmon Arm

Thirty-five minutes east and on the FortisBC natural gas system across much of the city, so the equipment mix skews toward gas furnaces including a large number of modern condensing units. Those fail differently from older atmospheric appliances, with condensate drains, pressure switches and inducer motors making up a large share of the faults, and diagnosing them properly means reading the fault codes rather than guessing.

The Shuswap

Sorrento, Blind Bay, Scotch Creek, Sicamous and the lake communities. Propane is common out here where natural gas does not reach, and a propane appliance that has been converted or set up carelessly will run poorly in ways that look like a fault. Many properties are also seasonal and run on deep setback, which means the first cold snap after a system has sat idle for months is when the failures surface. A check before the season rather than during it is worth a great deal here.

Before You Call

Three things worth checking, because they solve a real share of calls and cost nothing. Is the thermostat calling for heat and does it have working batteries. Is the filter clogged, which is the single most common cause of a system that runs but does not heat. And has the furnace switch, which looks like a light switch near the appliance, been turned off by someone. If all three are fine, call us.

Common Questions

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?

Commonly the burner is not staying lit while the blower keeps running, which points at ignition, a dirty flame sensor or a safety lockout. It can also be a thermostat set to run the fan continuously rather than on demand.

Why does my furnace keep shutting off?

Short cycling is usually restricted airflow causing the heat exchanger to overheat and trip a limit, an oversized furnace, or a thermostat located somewhere unrepresentative. Start with the filter, then call.

Do you do emergency heating repair at night?

Yes. No heat in winter is treated as an emergency because once the building cools far enough the plumbing is at risk, which turns a heating problem into a much more expensive one.

Should I repair or replace my furnace?

Under about twelve years, repair usually makes sense. Past fifteen, with a major component failed or a cracked heat exchanger, replacement is generally the better spend. A cracked heat exchanger is a safety issue and is not repaired.

Do you work on boilers and heat pumps as well as furnaces?

Yes. Gas and propane furnaces, boilers and hydronic systems, and heat pumps running in heating mode.

How often should a furnace be serviced?

Once a year before the heating season. Most of the emergency calls we take in winter are maintenance items that were not caught in the autumn.

What should I do if I have no heat and cannot get it back?

If the building is going to get cold before anyone can attend, shut the water off at the main and open the taps to drain the system. A split pipe from freezing costs far more than the heating repair.
